The conference included welcome remarks from CHLI Chairman, The Honorable Lincoln Diaz-Balart, as well as congressional remarks by CHLI Board Members, Senator Rick Scott (FL), Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart (FL-25), Congressman Bill Flores (TX-17), Congressman William Hurd (TX-23), Congressman Albio Sires (NJ-08), as well as remarks from Vice-Chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) and Chair of the House Financial Services Committee’s Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion, Congresswoman Joyce Beatty (OH-03).

Oballos Diaz, a Venezuelan asylum seeker, was able to work on legislation such as H.R. 549 that aims to support asylum seekers, introduced in the House of Representatives in January. The legislation proposes to allow Venezuelans eligibility for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) in the United States.
“As a Venezuelan refugee myself, I feel extremely humbled by the opportunity to help my people through the work I am doing on the Hill,” Oballos Diaz said.

CHLI gives students hands-on experience in congressional and corporate offices while earning academic credit hours.
Padilla graduated from UNM in May 2018 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and International Studies with concentrations in Latin America and conflict, peace, and diplomacy, and a minor in Spanish. While an undergraduate, she was a tour guide for the UNM Office of Admissions, president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council #8096, Associated Students of UNM Senator, a member of Trailblazers, and Chi Omega sorority. She studied abroad in Mexico and Italy.

Washington, D.C. - The Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) will host its 15th Annual Gala & Leadership Awards on Wednesday, May 15th, 2019, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in Washington, D.C.
At this year’s Gala, CHLI will honor His Excellency Luis Almagro, Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) with The CHLI Ileana Ros-Lehtinen International Leadership Award.
“It is a privilege for CHLI to be able to honor OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro, who is making history as an admirable advocate for democracy and the Rule of Law throughout our hemisphere. It will be our honor to be able to recognize his exemplary career,” stated CHLI Chairman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
